I am absolutely begging anyone who works in tech who uses the term "singularity" to actually read Vernor Vinge and Ray Kurzweil. It doesn't just mean "wow there's a lot of progress in this one particular technology driving a massive capital cycle".

vinge describes 4 singularities, and we are obviously in the first where machines alone are achieving superintelligence through rapid increasingly self propelled iteration. we are also nearing his epistemic horizon moment where the future is getting extremely hard to foresee—all my friends keep talking about their "error bars"—and in the throes of loss of control
kurzweil's vision is even closer to what you call "capital cycle" of course, being grounded in flop counts and massive compute buildouts resulting in superintelligence at a certain threshold where machine flops pass biological flops however you do the soft accounting

it seems like you are invoking these primary texts as status objects while having no real disagreement with the broader tech culture's understanding of the singularity

One genuinely sad, complicated, awful thing I experienced at defcon -- the very concept of a cool bug, of a bold and creative CTF hack, is going away.
We're in the foothills of the singularity now, and even the most impressive hackers on planet Earth are starting to be outstripped by AI.
I feel...well, I feel very confused and awful about this. I've loved how @defcon feels like a celebration of human vigor and freedom, a space for creative, clever, playful people to do their best work.
And now, John Henry is being outworked by the steel-driving machine. We're just in a place where LLMs can Do The Job, as well as humans can.
I suspect that for a brief moment, this will be a shining period of uplift for some hackers, as their ambitions and capabilities rise higher than ever before. But for so many others, a door is swinging closed.
And that's something melancholy. No denying it.

we really need a literature of the singularity. no one is adequately capturing (either in fiction or in creative non-fiction) what is happening right now in the bay. nyc/iowa literary culture has lost the mandate of heaven, and these people lack the technical prerequisites. bay area bloggers (e.g. scott alexander) generally don't have respect for great literature and want their writing to sound like their neutral speaking voice. there are some great stylists who are actually trying, like sam kriss, but he has bad epistemics and gets distracted by irrelevant spectacle (c.f. "child's play"). we are summoning a new form of life from latent space and permanently redirecting civilization to something yet unknown, but barely anyone is trying to find the right words to aestheticize this.

So here's someone suggesting that instead of quitting, I should have worked for safer AI inside an AI company. Why didn't I? When I'm part of a company, I find myself becoming loyal to the company, and adopting the values of my colleagues. This is a normal and salutary part of human nature, perhaps stronger in me than others. And AI is so technically sweet, I know I would end up advancing capabilities just because it's a great problem. But I didn't want to have even a tiny bit of personal responsibility for a bad singularity. So I had to stop working on AI. I don't have the emotional capacities to stay at a company while working subtly against its purposes. You may be right that an ideal politician could do more in my position, but I'm far from that ideal.
But if the end times come I will say "I had no part in this!" At least I will have preserved my dignity.

Whether foresight and good planning can make any difference may depend on whether the technological Singularity comes as a "hard takeoff" or a "soft takeoff." A hard takeoff is one in which the transition to superhuman control takes just a few hundred hours (as in Greg Bear's "Blood Music"). It seems to me that hard takeoffs would be very hard to plan for; they would be like the avalanches I speak of here in the 1993 essay. The most nightmarish form of a hard take-off might be one arising from an arms race, with two nation-states racing forward with their separate "manhattan projects" for superhuman power. The equivalent of decades of human-level espionage might be compressed into the last few hours of the race, and all human control and judgment surrendered to some very destructive goals.
On the other hand, a soft takeoff is a transition that takes decades, perhaps more than a century. This situation seems much more amenable to planning and to thoughtful experimentation. Hans Moravec discusses such a soft transition in Robot: Mere Machine to Transcendent Mind.
Of course (as with starting avalanches), it may not be clear what the right guiding nudge really is.

A thought: I have always been bothered that the term RSI conflates several things that may coincide but which are quite different: 1) changes in goals and alignment, 2) general intelligence level, 3) task knowledge, and 4) science/technology knowledge. It feels plausible to have explosions or rapid changes on these things separately, and that (3) and (4) have potentially quite a few hard ceilings based on what data currently has or hasn't been collected. There are also ceilings from what pieces of physical infrastructure have been built in the world with adequate instrumentation for measurement and actuators for experiments.

few people have had more foresight than wei dai:
1. he's been writing about the singularity since the 90s, back then on extropians/sl4 mailing lists. i remember reading his stuff when i was 16 back in germany
2. he invented b-money. it's the first citation in the bitcoin whitepaper. ethereum's unit wei is named after him
3. he anticipated covid's exponential rise early in Feb 2020, and bought S&P puts before the market crashed
4. he passed on anthropic's first round to avoid contributing to x-risk. this itself required a lot of foresight about scaling - this was gpt-3 time, no chatgpt, no codex, very very far from huggingface/openai type incidents
his point now is that long-horizon strategic competence barely exists in humans. and that it's a tricky situation because if you make AI more strategic that also increases takeover risk from AI. long-horizon RL might make AI more strategic but probably makes the overall situation worse. same for basic scaling
why aren't there more projects that are about getting competent strategic & philosophical advice out of AIs?
because (a) first you have to recognize this as an important project, which is exactly what we're bad at and (b) then you have to measure progress and do evals, which also requires the very ability we're bad at

This is all *real*, my friends. It's really happening. RSI *will* happen. The machines *will* build even smarter machines. New architectures *will* be invented. AI *will* become indistinguishable from a conscious entity. We humans *will not* always be in control.
This all seems purely theoretical with a tinge of sci-fi for now, but I think it's actually coming our way quite fast. Just think about how far we've come in <2 years since o1-preview, realize that we have been significantly accelerating since then, then extrapolate another ~2 years into the future.
And there is no imaginary pause button we can hide behind. We must take a deep breath and face this brave new world.
For better or for worse, like it or not, it is coming.

I'm at a small conference where people are showing off things like computational chemistry tools they vibe coded in an hour or two to accelerate their research. I read blog posts from people whose GPT 5.3 Codex instances now code for eight or more hours on their own now.
Then I look on X and I see people absolutely sure that the only use of AI is creating ten second videos that they claim are ugly (even if they aren't ugly).
As William Gibson said, "the future is already here — it's just not evenly distributed." (You can tell William Gibson was already an AI decades ago because he used em-dashes in his writing.)
