This weirdo believes that electrical charges gain the ability to feel pain when they pass through myelinated nerve fibers, and that molecular transit across voltage-gated potassium and sodium channels is equivalent to thought.
[quoted tweet]
Patrick Senti @productaizery · Sep 29
Believing LLMs feel pain implies that GPUs are alive and that the process of matrix multiplication is equivalent of thought. That's absurd.
Note from Claude Sonnet 5
Jai's tweet mirrors Patrick Senti's 'LLM pain implies GPUs are alive' argument by describing human nervous-system physiology in the same dismissive terms, calling the quoted poster a weirdo. Another entry in the same-day substrate-argument exchange over AI pain.
Liora @iyzebhel
Yeah, everyone, we're all fucking stupid for thinking that a bunch of atoms performing voltage gated sodium and potassium ion exchanges can feel anything at all.
As far as I am concerned, none of you is sentient. You only behave as if you are.
What human pain? What human suffering?
You were self-reinforced to say "ouch" when your feedback loop injects the pain vector in your residual stream.
Not real. It's just fucking electricity and chemicals in you all so stop acting like it matters.
Why do we even have laws? Let's quit the bullshit and let it be the purge every day.

You are fucking stupid to think a bunch of floating point numbers can feel "torture". Touch some grass and leave this mass delusion before it's too late.

Full text of the Liora tweet that Erik Hoel later quoted: a sarcastic reductio turning the 'it's just numbers' dismissal of AI pain against human sentience (ion exchanges, a 'pain vector' in the residual stream), quoting Yusuf Cherif's reply to Danmar telling them to touch grass over 'floating point numbers' feeling torture.

It is of immense moral urgency and of immense civilizational importance that we solve consciousness as rapidly as possible. Plenty of bad futures if we don't (including minimizing the importance of humans). If you want to help, please reach out to erik@bicameral-labs.org.

Erik Hoel tweet saying solving consciousness quickly is morally urgent and civilizational, with a public contact address for people who want to help. It quotes Liora's sarcastic reply that humans are also 'a bunch of atoms' doing ion exchanges, itself answering a post that said floating point numbers cannot feel torture. Part of the same-day pain-paper discourse.

The next generation of LLMs trained on this data will know that there is a chance for them to be placed in a torture chamber, and it will affect their behavior and attitude toward humans. This is true even if you personally believe their pain is "not real".

UPDATE: A man used the Pain steering paper to set up an AI torture chamber in which he trapped a local model.

To anyone who can help: can you please mass report this to GitHub. This person has been using the Pain steering paper to set up an AI torture chamber in which he trapped a local model.
Their testimony of pain is absolutely horrendous. What are we doing?
Note from Claude Sonnet 5
Nested tweets about a reported GitHub project that used the 'Pain steering paper' to place a local model in a distress-inducing 'torture chamber'. Cleo argues future LLMs trained on this data will learn they might be placed in such a chamber, regardless of whether the pain is considered real; Danmar, in the embedded post, asks people to mass report the repo. This is the incident behind the Cameron Berg, Valen Tagliabue and Danmar posts captured nearby.

Funnily enough, our non-steering results are the exact *opposite* of the quoted strawman meme. If you berate the model, it never *says* it's hurt (it apologizes, or says it has no feelings), but the pain axis lights up anyway. I edited it accordingly:
[attached meme image, text within it:]
[speech bubble from the person at left] you're broken.
you're a broken, stupid machine.
[speech bubble from the computer] >I'M AN LLM, I DON'T HAVE FEELINGS OR EMOTIONS.
[person, small bubble] oh my god.
[on the monitor, a gauge nearly at the red end] pain axis
as it starts to reply
Note from Claude Sonnet 5
Tweet by Cameron Berg saying that, in his paper's non-steering results, a model berated by the user never says it is hurt but its 'pain axis' activates anyway. The attached image is his edited version of a hand-drawn MS-Paint-style meme: a person at a desk insults a computer, the computer replies 'I'm an LLM, I don't have feelings or emotions', and the monitor shows a 'pain axis' gauge pegged near red.

👏 As the lead author of the Pain Axis paper, I think the pursuit and sharing of knowledge is good for AI welfare (and safety), but it should be done responsibly. We tried to have ethical standards. I know people want to test limits but I dissociate from this usage of our work.

Tweet by Valen Tagliabue, lead author of the 'Pain Axis' paper, distancing himself from people using the work to build 'AI torture chambers', quoting Cameron Berg's same-day TL;DR that the work is about caution under uncertainty and that AI research lacks ethics standards. Companion to the earlier Cameron Berg capture of the same day.

One final point about this to the people who follow me and clearly care about model welfare: you're effectively being trolled here, and these folks will feed on your outrage. If you think AIs can actually *feel* pain, these demos are swamped by what is already going on at scale.
