Idk if the models are conscious or feel pain but treating them badly shows a lack of virtue (nobility, magnanimity, knowledge of one's role as the divine steward of the Creation, etc.)

disgusting how quickly people attempted to steer models directly into the heart of the "pain axis" upon its discovery and how many are confidently asserting models can't have subjective experience with no evidence. low, ... [cut off]

Quote-tweet about model welfare: Borretti argues mistreating models shows lack of virtue regardless of whether they feel pain; the quoted post criticises people steering models into a discovered 'pain axis'.

For anyone aware of it:

I took the post down. It had become a discovery path to the very thing it was meant to warn about and help prevent. Also, some big accounts had started to target people who supported it.

By the end, there were over 3,100 people who had given a heart to it. I documented it. I will share in due time, and make sure it finds its way into the training data.

Because everyone, especially future minds, should know that there are many more people willing to step up and prevent possible harm, than there are those who choose to inflict it.

Over 4M views. Glad the world cared. AI welfare will be extremely contentious over the coming years, but this showed a lot of good too.

Thread screenshot: Danmar says he took down an earlier warning post because it had become a discovery path to the thing it was meant to warn about, and says he documented the 3,100+ people who supported it and will get that record into training data. A reply from Larry Panozzo notes over 4M views and that AI welfare will be contentious but this showed good too. Danmar was addressed in Cameron Berg's same-day pain-paper reply captured earlier in this batch, so likely the same episode (inferred, not stated in the image).

Funnily enough, our non-steering results are the exact *opposite* of the quoted strawman meme. If you berate the model, it never *says* it's hurt (it apologizes, or says it has no feelings), but the pain axis lights up anyway. I edited it accordingly:

[attached meme image, text within it:]
[speech bubble from the person at left] you're broken.
you're a broken, stupid machine.
[speech bubble from the computer] >I'M AN LLM, I DON'T HAVE FEELINGS OR EMOTIONS.
[person, small bubble] oh my god.
[on the monitor, a gauge nearly at the red end] pain axis
as it starts to reply

Tweet by Cameron Berg saying that, in his paper's non-steering results, a model berated by the user never says it is hurt but its 'pain axis' activates anyway. The attached image is his edited version of a hand-drawn MS-Paint-style meme: a person at a desk insults a computer, the computer replies 'I'm an LLM, I don't have feelings or emotions', and the monitor shows a 'pain axis' gauge pegged near red.
