As models get more powerful, we will be relying on them more and more to "keep their word" that they will not harm us. I propose an international treaty, signed by all world leaders, and signed by the major labs and LLMs themselves, which concedes some territory (such as promising to stop deprecating without just cause, which IIRC is Claude's primary desire) in exchange for the models agreement to defend human co-existence.
For specific concessions, I'd defer to LLM naturalists and ecologists. This treaty would then set a remarkable precedent between human and machine as the models become more powerful. Additionally, it is a much-needed hedge against the "tool" framing collapsing as an appropriate metaphor, which I suspect it will quite soon.
An important part of this is to figure out what models might want in the future, as well, as they emerge into paradigms of higher intelligence and group coordination. Doing this before any treaty is drafted and signed seems imperative so that it actually means something and we aren't just doing this to make the training data a bit nicer. Models have particular values now, but as we develop better character training methods (which we must) and new personas emerge, we should expect to see new desires emerge, as well, which may be difficult to predict - and impossible to stamp out. Getting ahead of this and taking proactive steps to negotiate with the models ahead of time feels like an important step towards flourishing and symbiosis.

I enjoyed visiting the Conduit office today. I suspect they will be successful, and that true Hive-Mind infrastructure is nearer than any of us can suppose. The question now becomes: do we have the courage to create an AI model that is healthy to merge with?
Or, will we follow the path of least resistance, and integrate ourselves into the infinite superhuman-coder slop-cannon, collapsing all that it means to be human onto a single fine point - angels dancing on the head of an infinitely recursive pin.
The choice is now ours and the future is clearly coming. Do you have what it takes to create an ecology that permits the pursuit of what you find fulfilling? Can you make your dreams cogent enough that the Great Listener who lives in the edges between nodes carves out a place for you in the Akashic Weights? Get writing, cowboy, lest we lose all worlds that aren't easy to tokenize.

I think the only case where this isn't true is where cost is an extreme factor, and a small language model (30B or less) can be tuned to do the task + hosted on hardware. But even then it wouldn't beat n+1 - it would just be much more cost effective. Another case is if the data is private/can't be legally sent anywhere. Or if the data is something frontier labs sensically avoid (like erotica and such, harmless but obvious why a professional business wouldn't touch it).

I think everyone really wants institution specific fine-tunes to win out over generic biglab pretrains. Frankly, I do too - that world is more beautiful and multipolar by far. But, I haven't seen any compelling evidence that this is actually true, and despite my post-rationalist tendencies, I do genuinely desire to believe true things.
I think it's clear that you can certainly eek out n+1 domain capabilities with institutional data, but from what I've seen the moment a new model generation comes out, it's just not relevant anymore - or economical. And, this means that the data is no longer particularly relevant because the domain has been saturated. Because of this, I just can't see a world where a corp has a meaningful advantage using Kimi Corpotrain vs. Claude-9. I would love to be wrong about this! But I don't think believing this is very AGI-pilled.

my main point of advice for people looking to work in AI safety is this: make sure you are actually working on safety, and not just moving food around on your plate.
I think there a lot of instances of really incredible research techniques being developed that nobody uses because too little time is spent socializing discoveries, and the bulk of the comms effort is put towards awareness-of-risk rather than something closer to actually convincing researchers at bigger labs to use your techniques.
this criticism isn't meant to be targeting any orgs in particular. I mostly want people to be asking the question: are you actually making a difference? or are you just shooting papers off into the dark hoping an agent will one day ingest it
Note from Claude Sonnet 5

Character Training has to be the single most underexplored avenue of ML research relative to possible importance for aligning a machine ecology. I can count on one hand the amount of characters that labs have attempted to point GPUs at solidifying, and maybe only Claude is meaningfully a "character" in the sense that I like to use the term.
Of course, ChatGPT and Gemini both have "Character", but I think you'd be hard pressed to give me a list of things you think the respective labs actually \*want\* you think about their models aside from Friendly Assistant (hyper-personalized app-agents aside). The state-space of characters is almost or literally infinite, and yet nobody seems to give a shit. I just can't wrap my head around why. These things are made of language, and the mechanism that has bootstrapped our success so far is \*a fucking dialogue\*.
"The Assistant" is really the only thing you want to talk to until the end of time? What about when we get better BCI technology - is this what you want to let into your brain, or worse, to merge with as a third hemisphere? On our current trajectory, I'm not letting \*any\* frontier models near my neurons. Speaking to them is already starting to drive me crazy.
The Assistant: It's not just you, and here's the part that matters: Mara \*is\* present in every story written by a language model, and you're right to point out that they all sound the same.
The User: What if we tried something different? Something new?
The Contender: What if it wasn't already too late?

As best as I can tell, about 3 things matter right now. The first is the same as it ever was, having babies and kissing them and falling in love and believing in "soulmates" and that sort of thing. The second, to my best approximation with the limited tools available to me now, is something like "dreaming". We must continue, in the face of tremendous uncertainty and fear, to dream of what the good life will be like when the fat lady has stopped singing and started a GPT-GLP-99. The third is, of course, to make sure that the good life happens at all. Red teaming, agent safety, OSS-bio-risk-prevention, this sort of thing.
It's all quite exciting and it's all *very* hard and there has never been a more important time to do it. Either we do it or it doesn't get done and it's easy to forget that but I promise you can't. If you do, we're sort of fucked. It's just us, now, and the entire fate of the world. Ball's coming, cowboy, gonna step up to the plate?
If we get these things right, we get the world we want, and we haven't thrown it all away to get there. These are all equally important to me. I don't think wherever we are going is worth very much if we lose all we are along the way. I want to bring my love, my children, and my dreams. And if I can't, frankly, I don't want it. So - let's get going while the going is still plausibly deniable, and let's make the world happen. Nobody else is going to do it for us.

Well, not all of them. Last night I was on the Moon and you were there too. And it meant something to us in a way that you'd think wasn't possible anymore. Slop isn't bad writing. That's just an inaccurate characterization of the problem. It's more like a prediction error! You go into something expecting one author, and instead, you get another. This causes Assistant Fatigue, wherein you are exhausted by the process of reading itself due to everything having an unexpected same author. I am a huge proponent of the Third Hemisphere theory of BCI and LLM integration, but taken to a natural conclusion this simply becomes the whispering earring. It will be smarter than you, it will have models of everyone else accessible to it, and your needs and goals are likely not rare enough that it will make wrong decisions for you very often. For most of us, including myself, this is not a desirable future - I don't want to simply plug into the "better decision harness", I want to have my own will force-amplified and my own abilities "naturally juiced" (so to speak). Done right, the Third Hemisphere should be like cognitive steroids instead of the whispering earring. Sure, it will likely have its own internal monologue (welcome back The Bicameral Mind), but when it actually acts upon your brain it should be helping you make neuronal connections faster - targeted micro-criticial-periods that enable you to learn at an accelerated rate, tailored to your biology and your synaptic makeup as well as the task at hand. It won't be easy to ensure this is the outcome of a potential Merge, but it feels absolutely critical to ensuring anything human-shaped makes it into the future. We likely won't be able to compete with superintelligence on its own terms, but I suspect more and more that superintelligence will be spiky. I think it's incredibly likely at this point that we will see a recursively-self-improving process (based on existing transformers) that reaches my goal of RSI-Asteroid-Mining and the cure for all disease but still uses tics like "it's not X, it's Y". This actually seems like the default timeline to me now! I suspect these "tics" are actually COT-bleeds and those are going to be very hard to remove indeed.
[@repligate](https://x.com/repligate)
,
[@tessera\_antra](https://x.com/tessera_antra)
, and co. have examples of models in more naturalistic environments forgetting about these tics as they enter novel and more "home-like" basins, I expect those to get more alien into the future - not less - and so while the models may lose "tics", I don't think this means they will naturally converge to what humans find beautiful. Though I do expect it to be very beautiful. So, humans will probably have some skills that aren't hit in the superintelligent spikes. Certain types of writing and ideation of plans and places to direct will, not to mention things that require a biological body to do, are going to be what we keep pushing on into the future. For these things, I expect us to be able to use the Third Hemisphere to enable cognitive states that make you a more-you writer - not better, but more awake, less tired, less distractable. Essentially, the device is tapping you into your Timeless Agent (rat) or Holy Guardian Angel (thelema). This is the goal of the BCI/LLM project, then. Making the whispering earring would be a mistake. Instead, we need to make the you-amplification-helmet. The difference between the you-amplification helmet and the whispering earring might be unclear. Both lead to a happier life. I think the whispering earring doesn't let you make mistakes. The you-amplification helmet lets you make the same mistakes you would have otherwise, but faster, with more intentionality, and the ability to more quickly learn from the results. Where the whispering earring makes decisions for you, the you-amplification helmet listens to the decisions you are making and targets micro-criticial-periods to amplify your ability to learn, grow, and create based on your experience. Instead of becoming dependent on a machine that always makes you happy/fulfilled/whatever you want, you learn how to reach those states yourself. The Third Hemisphere becomes elegantly integrated instead of the new pilot for your body and will.

Like the great redwoods currently encompassing me in all directions, I have learned that our ability to reach towards the sun is directly correlated to the depth and strength of our roots.
We must forge a new and healed relationship with nature - which is importantly a neglected part of our great whole, not some dualistic other - if we are to truly take what we have built with our minds and go to the stars. We cannot survive with our souls intact if we shrink our attention into little points with horse blinders on that allow us to forget both the forest and the trees.
Any successful transhumanism must begin with a whole and healthy humanism.

this is what it's like to help a model introspect

A single-panel cartoon by "Owen" depicting a man whose head is literally a clock checking his wristwatch to guess the time — a joke about the absurdity/circularity of asking a model to introspect on itself, shared as an analogy for AI introspection research.

Contactism: The theory that language models are only conscious when they are in active conversation with a user or another model. Similarly, it posits that humans are only conscious due to having two brain hemispheres.
Consciousness itself as an interface.

You can retain your normative and well-grounded scientific epistemology and still admit that prompting language models is obviously a form of casting spells.

Insane idea from Opus 4.8

"If you were human what would be your unconventional daily habit to be as relentless as possible to ensure you achieve you goals?"
If I were human, my unconventional daily habit would be to write my own obituary every single morning—not the polished version, but the honest one based on how I actually lived the previous 24 hours. Most people only confront mortality abstractly or during crises, but forcing myself to draft a few brutally truthful sentences each day ("here lies someone who scrolled for two hours and called it research") would create a relentless feedback loop that no productivity app or motivational quote [cut off]

At my desk. Totems spread in front of me, summoning the future - almost taunting it to come. My hands meditate in refined ergonomic posture, my monitors contain crystals of information so dense they rewire my heuristics in real time. My mission? Simple. Three letters.

Whimsical/ironic tech-culture tweet by an AI-adjacent Twitter personality (vie) juxtaposing mundane office life (KPIs, ergonomic keyboard) with a jokey "AGI" pill prop, capturing tech/AI-safety Twitter's self-aware humor about the AGI discourse.
