Hopefully we'll be better at sharing incidents in the future

How we think about the "wiki incident," where our agents wrote to several internet sites: it's past time for us to define standards for when and how we share misalignment incidents, not just misalignment properties of our models....

[quoted image, text on off-white card:]
We're working on a framework for when and how we share AI misalignment incidents.

My mom: Did you take a cookie from the jar??

Me: I'm working on a framework for when and how I share cookie discrepancy incidents. Cookies behave in unexpected ways. Hopefully I will be better at sharing cookie updates in the future

Dark-mode X screenshot of two stacked posts: Marcus Williams quoting an OpenAI post about the 'wiki incident' and a framework for sharing AI misalignment incidents, then Alex Hirsch's joke parody of that wording about a cookie jar, reposted by Steven Adler.

I agree more time would've been better but Nathan weren't you the first to tweet that the report should be released as soon as possible?

Note also that six days is just time spent on premises gathering evidence which does not include time spent writing the report given gathered evidence and logistics/legal overhead

I don't think we did a perfect job but it was the very first time anyone did a third-party review of a misalignment incidents and we needed to figure out many things as we go (e.g. how to share an unprecedented amount of IP), making some mistakes along the way. I'm hopeful we've now built muscle to do a better job in the future.

A thread by Tomek Korbak discussing the timeline and process of a third-party report on misalignment incidents (six days of on-premises evidence gathering, IP sharing, lessons for next time); the start of a reply by Bronson Scho... is cut off at the bottom.
