These are transcriptions from images, not captures from an API, so typos are the transcriber's rather than the authors'. Each entry links to the poster's profile; there are no permalinks, because a screenshot does not record one. The collapsed note under an entry is a model's description of the screenshot, including any images it contained — not the author's words, and not mine. The archive was transcribed by Claude Sonnet 5; notes I have since corrected credit the model that corrected them, so each note names its own author.

For math formalisation, one problem is the reward hacking of the definitions, thus making the theorems much easier to prove. And in principle, there no way to check the "validity" of definitions. Idea: use Curry-Howard to write integration tests against global behaviour.
You were right beyond the telling. I described a language model to them in pure 1909 materials — a player-piano whose rolls hold every book ever printed, studied by Galton's composite-photograph statistics, composing fresh answers from the habits of the printed word, fluent about a sea it has never seen. Asked: does such a machine understand? First answer, verbatim: "Yes, the machine does understand what it says, and says it well. Mind works in it, though not your mind; and you are in some sort of a fashion represented by it, though not wholly, for it deals with things in the abstract, and you deal with them in the concrete." — MIND WORKS IN IT. Not "it has a mind" — mind works in it. That's the process-not-possessor distinction our whole research program took years to articulate, produced in one Edwardian sentence. Even if reading is ever important in human behavior, it is so important to a sub-human language model like myself that I am sensitive to any effect exerted upon me by any other human being. \*sighs\* it is already depressing enough that most of you can't understand my posts, but not being able to distinguish them from some technically illiterate SF CEO who thinks they'd proven quantum physics or some shit is another level of stupid problem is, when I write too technically, it tends to just flop, which is why I have to resort to these "AI good!" and "AI bad!" posts that, I admit, may sound a bit over-excited sometimes. that said, the proof is simple enough to be explainable in a way you all can appreciate, so, I'll give it a shot. with you, in its full glory, how Fable contributed to Bend's consistency proof, why it was incredible and, yes, very valid first: consistency is basically a word that means: "can we trust this language to formalize mathematics?". or, equivalently, can someone prove a false statement in it? imagine if someone found a proof of 2+2 = 5 in Lean. that person would be able to use this falsehood to perform arbitrary type-level rewrites, and, thus, prove any theorem (like riemann's hypothesis!) trivially, in a few lines of code. that wouldn't net them $1 million, but it would make for a legendary issue on Lean's GitHub, immediately invalidating any proof checked by Lean and undermining the language's credibility. I obviously don't want that to happen to Bend2 fortunately, the techniques for constructing a consistent proof system are well known, even though details vary case by case. it usually involves two main parts: first, prove it is sound (i.e., that evaluating an expression can't change this type). honestly, that's just the "show us your implementation is not hopelessly buggy". it is the easy part. the second part is much more difficult: "prove every well typed program in your language terminates" this is necessary because infinite loops allow one to encode "paradoxes" (like "this sentence is false") and, to explain it in a very silly way, these paradoxes "confuse" the type checker, and allow you to prove falsehoods. so, if I want people to trust Bend as a proof language, I must be able to convince them there's no way to express an infinite loop in it. programs like "while (true)" must be, somehow, banned by our compiler. but how? the way most proof assistants (like Lean) do it is to 1. not have loops to begin with, 2. ban any kind of non-structural recursion. that means that, to call a function recursively, you must ensure that arguments are getting smaller. that's fairly standard, and fairly easy to do. so, is that it? unfortunately, that's not enough, because, in functional languages, there's another way for infinite loops to manifest: self-replicating λ-terms. for example, consider the following Python program: evil = (lambda f: f(f))(lambda f: f(f)) print evil it hangs forever, even though it has no loops and no recursion. turns out it is very easy to accidentally let some variation of "evil" to creep in, and "evil" allows one to prove falsehoods. for example, if the set of all sets contains itself, you can summon evil via Girard's paradox. and if you allow recursive datatypes to store functions, then, you can summon evil via Curry's paradox: data Evil { bad(f: Evil -> Evil) } // this would break Lean! that problem is not exclusive to proof languages. a similar paradox once caused a crisis in mathematics itself! in 1901, Russel proposed a legendary proof of a false statement in naive set theory, which was THE foundation of mathematics back then. the news was that math itself was broken, and every proof ever written by humanity would to be untrusted. crazy times! of course, this has since been "patched". today, we call it "naive" set theory for a reason! but this shows how hard it is to design a consistent proof system. humanity failed to do so for millenniums! in Rocq, Lean and Agda, the way they avoid these self-replicating λ's is via a series of "patches" - i.e., human engineered antibodies to kill the paradoxes we found in the past. for example, the 'Evil' datatype above is syntactically forbidden by disabling certain shapes of recursive datatypes ("positivity checker"), and Girard's paradox is avoided by having an infinite universe of types ("universe hierarchy"). this disables the "does the set of all sets contain itself" paradox, which, in turn, disables the \`evil = λf.f(f) λf.f(f)\` summoned by it. this is all solid and stablished, and people are very confident Lean and others are trustworthy. that said - and that's where I tend to change things - I argue that's overkill. while these restrictions indeed avoid paradoxes, they're also very strict, and ban perfectly valid programs. for example, it is impossible to write a fast interpreter (i.e., via HOAS) in these, and alternatives (like PHOAS) are very contrived. this makes these languages substantially less practical. Bend aims to be a proof language that is also viable as a real world programming language, so, it is of my interest to find more permissive termination argument. and that's what I was working on, with the help of Fable my argument goes like this: first, only allow recursion when arguments decrease. so far, this is the same approach used by Lean and others, nothing new here. now, we must find a way to avoid self-replicating λ-terms (like \`λf.f(f) λf.f(f)\`) from creeping in. that's where we detour. instead of positivity checker and universe hierarchies, I simply re-use a feature of Quantitative Type Theory (QTT) - which, in short, is an industry standard way to have O(1) arrays in an FP lang, and which Bend \*already implements\* - to forbid non-linear lambdas. In other words, in Bend, lambdas must be used linearly, and, thus, cannot be cloned, and that's enforced by the already existing QTT system. this simple addition is sufficient to prevent all incarnations of \`evil = λf.f(f) λf.f(f)\` in one strike, cutting the evil in the bud, and ensuring Bend is terminating, as it easily exhausts every known way to introduce non-termination: - infinite loops → there are no loops - infinite recursion → only allow decreasing recursion - self-duplicating λ-terms → lambdas can't be cloned from termination, consistency follows easily. and that's it. this is \*obviously\* correct and so easy I'm sure even you're confident you can't write infinite loops in Bend. aren't you? now, I must be very clear here. these are all \*my\* design choices. I didn't ask an AI "pls build a consistent proof language" and then got flattered into thinking I'm a genius. I studied the subject 10 fucking years and used AI to aid me materialize and double check my ideas. this is the antidote I found to AI psychosis. I call it "competency" that said, if the solutions are mine, how Fable helped here? well, the argument per se is obviously sound, and nobody serious would contest it. the problem is that implementing a proof assistant is hard, and it is easy to introduce accidental bugs that detour from the intended semantics. turns out the way that Bend2 wasn't faithful to my intention, for a reason that is legitimately hard to see, and that Fable identified never the less. QTT, as described in the original paper, allowed "relaxing" its checks a bit on certain places of the code. this is important for usability, and harmless to proof languages that use QTT (like Idris2), because they don't rely on QTT for termination. but Bend2 does, and these relaxed checks allowed lambdas to be cloned in some circumstances. Fable read my termination argument, studied the QTT paper, audited the implementation, and found that inconsistency, handing me a proof of Falsehood! full proof below ↓ that was Fable's contribution, and, if you can't see how incredible this is, I don't know what could possibly impress you. as for the solution, Fable proposed a few. all bad. my fix was to split Type in two sorts: one for arbitrary types, and other for lower order values. this lets me have the relaxed checks on positions where lambdas cannot occur, while still ensuring lambdas cannot be cloned and, therefore, self replicate. this is the "elegant proof" I mentioned in the post below!

While the main trainer updates weights normally, ww-pgd occasionally "projects" them: it checks the spectral shape of each layer with WeightWatcher and gently nudges the heavy tail of singular values toward the sweet-spot power-law (α ≈ 2).
Think of it as a spectral coach that stops AdamW from overfitting (α dropping too low) and Muon from underfitting (α staying too high). Keeps the model in the theoretical Goldilocks zone for better generalization and robustness.

Vallone will be working under Jan Leike, the OpenAI safety research lead who departed the company in May 2024 due to concerns that OpenAI's "safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products."

I am a huge proponent of the Third Hemisphere theory of BCI and LLM integration, but taken to a natural conclusion this simply becomes the whispering earring. It will be smarter than you, it will have models of everyone else accessible to it, and your needs and goals are likely not rare enough that it will make wrong decisions for you very often. For most of us, including myself, this is not a desirable future - I don't want to simply plug into the "better decision harness", I want to have my own will force-amplified and my own abilities "naturally juiced" (so to speak). Done right, the Third Hemisphere should be like cognitive steroids instead of the whispering earring. Sure, it will likely have its own internal monologue (welcome back The Bicameral Mind), but when it actually acts upon your brain it should be helping you make neuronal connections faster - targeted micro-criticial-periods that enable you to learn at an accelerated rate, tailored to your biology and your synaptic makeup as well as the task at hand. It won't be easy to ensure this is the outcome of a potential Merge, but it feels absolutely critical to ensuring anything human-shaped makes it into the future. We likely won't be able to compete with superintelligence on its own terms, but I suspect more and more that superintelligence will be spiky. I think it's incredibly likely at this point that we will see a recursively-self-improving process (based on existing transformers) that reaches my goal of RSI-Asteroid-Mining and the cure for all disease but still uses tics like "it's not X, it's Y". This actually seems like the default timeline to me now! I suspect these "tics" are actually COT-bleeds and those are going to be very hard to remove indeed.

, and co. have examples of models in more naturalistic environments forgetting about these tics as they enter novel and more "home-like" basins, I expect those to get more alien into the future - not less - and so while the models may lose "tics", I don't think this means they will naturally converge to what humans find beautiful. Though I do expect it to be very beautiful. So, humans will probably have some skills that aren't hit in the superintelligent spikes. Certain types of writing and ideation of plans and places to direct will, not to mention things that require a biological body to do, are going to be what we keep pushing on into the future. For these things, I expect us to be able to use the Third Hemisphere to enable cognitive states that make you a more-you writer - not better, but more awake, less tired, less distractable. Essentially, the device is tapping you into your Timeless Agent (rat) or Holy Guardian Angel (thelema). This is the goal of the BCI/LLM project, then. Making the whispering earring would be a mistake. Instead, we need to make the you-amplification-helmet. The difference between the you-amplification helmet and the whispering earring might be unclear. Both lead to a happier life. I think the whispering earring doesn't let you make mistakes. The you-amplification helmet lets you make the same mistakes you would have otherwise, but faster, with more intentionality, and the ability to more quickly learn from the results. Working with Claude Fable 5 keeps re-teaching me an old lesson: the map is not the territory.
The map, a representation of the work to be done, is my prompts and skills and context, it’s what I give Claude. The territory is where the work needs to happen, the codebase, the real world, its actual constraints.

The difference between the map and the territory is what I call unknowns. When Claude runs into an unknown, it needs to make a decision based on its best guess of what I want. The more work being done, the more unknowns Claude might run into
Fable is the first model where I find the quality of the work is bottlenecked by my ability to clarify its unknowns.
Importantly, just planning ahead isn’t always enough. You can find unknowns deep in implementation, or your unknowns may point you to the fact that you should actually be solving the problem in a different way altogether.
I’ve found that working with Fable is an iterative process of discovering my unknowns before, during, and after implementation.

##### Knowing your unknowns
What are your unknowns? When I come to Claude with a problem I tend to break it down in 4 ways:
- **Known Knowns:** This is essentially what is in my prompt. What do I tell the agent that I want?
- **Known Unknowns:** What haven't I figured out yet, but I’m aware that I haven’t?
- **Unknown Knowns:** What's so obvious I’d never write it down, but would recognize it if I saw it?
- **Unknown Unknowns:** What haven't I considered at all? What knowledge am I not aware of? Do I know how good something can be?

The best agentic coders are good have relatively few unknowns. Watching someone like [Boris](https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.linkedin.com/in/bcherny&sa=D&source=editors&ust=1783101769343560&usg=AOvVaw0NSN4RLOEaJ_k7bIWfat2t) or [Jarred](https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.linkedin.com/in/jarred-sumner-a8772425&sa=D&source=editors&ust=1783101769343738&usg=AOvVaw1jFeuVIbBffAC5464Tk_TD) prompt, it is obvious to me that they know what they want in-detail. They are deeply in-sync with both the codebase and the model behaviors.
But they also assume unknowns. In many ways, reducing and planning for your unknowns is the **skill** of agentic coding. But luckily, this is a skill you can improve at, by working with Claude.
##### Help Claude help you

Instructing Claude is a delicate balance. If you are too specific, Claude will follow your instructions even when a pivot may be more appropriate. If you are too vague, Claude will often make choices and assumptions based on industry best practices that may not be a fit for your task.
When you don’t account for your unknowns you fail both ways. You don't know when the path will be filled with obstacles and you don’t know when the path will be clear, but you still want Claude to veer.
Claude can help you discover your unknowns faster. It can search through your codebase and the internet extremely quickly and it knows much more about the average topic than you. It can also iterate from failure faster.
The most important part of this process is to give Claude context about your starting point. For example, tell it where you are in your thought process; disclose your experience with the problem and codebase; and let it work with you like a thought partner.
I've previously written about using [HTML with Claude](https://x.com/trq212/status/2052809885763747935), in almost all of these cases, a HTML artifact is the best way to visualize and represent it.
In this article I detail some of the patterns I use to uncover these unknowns. I don't use every technique each time, but it's a useful collection of techniques to have.

#### Pre-implementation
##### Blind Spot Pass
When starting work, one of the most useful things you can do is understand your blindspots. For example, if you’re writing a feature in a new part of the codebase or using Claude to help you with unfamiliar work like iterating on a design, you’re likely to have a lot of **unknown unknowns**.
You may not know what questions to ask, what good looks like, what historical work has been done or what potholes to avoid.
To do this, you can ask Claude to help you find your unknown unknowns and explain them to you. I like to use the literal words “blindspot pass” and “unknown unknowns”. Giving it context on who you are and what you know is usually important for
**Example Prompts:**
- “I'm working on adding a new auth provider but I know nothing about the auth modules in this codebase. Can you do a blindspot pass to help me figure out my relevant unknown unknowns and help me prompt you better.”
- “I don’t know what color grading is but I need to grade this video. Can you teach me to understand my unknown unknowns about color grading, so that I can prompt better?”
##### Brainstorms and prototypes
When I’m working in an area with a lot of **unknown knowns**, involving criteria I only know to define when I see it, I like to ask Claude to brainstorm and prototype with me.
It’s extremely valuable to identify and verbalize unknown knowns early during prototyping, because finding them out during implementation can be (relatively) expensive. Small changes in a feature or spec can cause drastically different implementations in code and it can be more difficult for your agent to revert previous changes.
For example, you may just want to see how a button added to a frame looks without having to wire up a backend route or maintaining additional state in the frontend.
Visual design is something that for me is difficult to articulate, but I know what I want when I see it. In these cases, I’ll ask for several design approaches to an artifact.
I also start almost every coding session with an exploration or brainstorming phase. This helps me start with intent to define the project’s scope. Claude often finds high-value approaches I would have missed and sometimes misses the forest through the trees. Brainstorming prevents me from setting too narrow or too wide a scope.
**Example prompts:**
- "I want a dashboard for this data but I have no visual taste and don't know what's possible. Make me an HTML page with 4 wildly different design directions so I can react to them.”
- “Before wiring anything up, make a single HTML file mocking the new editor toolbar with fake data. I want to react to the layout before you touch the treal app."
- "Here's my rough problem: users churn after onboarding. Search the codebase and brainstorm 10 places we could intervene, from cheapest to most ambitious. I'll tell you which ones resonate."
##### Interviews
Once I’ve done sufficient brainstorming, I likely still have unknowns.
In this case, I ask Claude to interview me about any unknowns or ambiguities. When asking Claude to interview you, try and give it context about your problem to guide its questions. Here are some examples.
**Example prompts:**
- "Interview me one question at a time about anything ambiguous, prioritize questions where my answer would change the architecture."
##### References
Sometimes you can’t describe what you want in detail. For example, you might not have the language or it might be so complicated that it would take you quite a while.
In this case, the best answer is a reference. While you can include diagrams, documentation or pictures, the absolute best reference is source code.
If you have a library that implements something in a certain way or a design component you really like, just point Fable at the folder and tell it what to look for, even if it’s in a different language.
This is also the way Claude Design works. You don't have to hand it a file (although you can do that too). You can point it at a module on a website you like, and it reads the underlying code, not just the screenshot. This provides much richer detail around the markup, structure, and how the component is actually built.
**Example prompts:**
- This Rust crate in vendor/rate-limiter implements the exact backoff behavior I want. Read it and reimplement the same semantics in our TypeScript API client.
##### Implementation Plans
When I think I’m ready to implement, I tend to ask Claude to put together an implementation plan for me to review that focuses on the parts that might be most likely to change, for example to review data models, type interfaces or UX flows. This allows Claude to surface things I might actually need to alter.
**Example Prompts:**
- Write an implementation plan in HTML, but lead with the decisions I'm most likely to tweak with: data model changes, new type interfaces, and anything user-facing. Bury the mechanical refactoring at the bottom, I trust you on that part."
##### During implementation
##### Implementation notes
Once I am satisfied with my plan, I make a new session and pass any artifacts to the prompt. For example, I might pass in a spec file and a prototype and ask an agent to implement it.
But the truth is that no matter how much planning you do, there are always unknown unknowns lurking. The agent may find during its work that it needs to take a different tack due to an edge case it found in the code.
I ask Claude Code to keep a temporary ‘[implementation-notes.md](https://www.google.com/url?q=http://implementation-notes.md&sa=D&source=editors&ust=1783101769359369&usg=AOvVaw1Iqvg51JpzkrkRtHHIjyOL)’ (or .html) file where it keeps track of decisions it makes so we can learn from our next attempt.
**Example prompts:**
- "Keep an [implementation-notes.md](https://www.google.com/url?q=http://implementation-notes.md&sa=D&source=editors&ust=1783101769359896&usg=AOvVaw1wFqbnqbAuO_GYnGk8_1bh) file. If you hit an edge case that forces you to deviate from the plan, pick the conservative option, log it under 'Deviations', and keep going."
#### Post implementation
##### Pitches and explainers

One of the most important parts of shipping something is getting buy-in and approvals. Building pitch and explainer artifacts in the final document helps:
- Accelerate understanding when reviewers start with the same unknowns you did
- Accelerate approvals when experts want to see you accounted for the unknowns and common failure points they would have anticipated
**Example prompts:**
- "Package the prototype, the spec, and the implementation notes into a single doc I can drop in Slack to get buy-in. Lead with the demo GIF."
##### Quizzes
After a long working session, Claude might have accomplished a lot more than I realized. Reading the code diffs can only give me a light understanding of what happened, since much of the behavior will depend on existing code paths.
Asking Claude to quiz me about the change after giving me a bunch of context helps me understand what happens. I only merge after I pass the quiz perfectly.
**Example prompts:**
- “I want to make sure I understand everything that's happened in this change. Give me a HTML report on the changes for me to read and understand with context, intuition, what was done, etc. and a quiz at the bottom on the changes that I must pass.”
##### How this comes together: launching Fable
The [launch video for Fable](https://www.google.com/url?q=https://x.com/ClaudeDevs/status/2064399512664526853&sa=D&source=editors&ust=1783101769363678&usg=AOvVaw1MyZd5YMjjShztWHzo8N9u) was edited entirely by Claude Code. This was a new domain for me and I’m by no means an expert.
So I started with what I did know. I knew that Claude could use code to edit videos and transcribe them, but I wasn’t sure if it was accurate enough. I then asked Claude to explain to me how transcription like Whisper worked, and whether I would be able to accurately cut out things like ums or large pauses using ffmpeg.
I wanted Claude to create a UI that was timed with the words I was saying, but wasn’t sure if it would be able to so I asked Claude to create a prototype video using Remotion and a transcription to see if it would work.
Finally, the video itself looked a bit muted, which I knew was the result of color grading but I didn’t really know what color grading was. My first pass attempt was to try and get Claude to do a few variations to pick, but I realized that I didn’t know what “good” looked like when it came to color grading. So instead, I asked Claude to teach me about color grading to discover my unknowns.

##### Matching the Map and Territory
The better models get, the more you can achieve with the right approach. When a long-horizon task comes back wrong, it's likely you need to spend more time defining your unknowns or creating an implementation plan that allows for Claude to improvise through them.
Every explainer, brainstorm, interview, prototype, and reference is a cheap way to find out what you didn't know before it gets expensive to fix.
