With this kind of thing, I have found the AI's narration of its own reasoning to be very unreliable. Maybe it isn't even true, you know? Most of the time when I check there is some fib. I mean I hate to be so suspicious, but you know, we really oughta be.

4. I am disappointed by the writeup of this proof (sorry Lijie -- I should've taken a look at it earlier!). It writes in a way that's characteristic of a lot of ChatGPT-generated proofs, in which it …

Tweet by Danielle Fong arguing that AI models' self-narrated reasoning explanations are often unreliable or fabricated and should be treated with suspicion, quoting a thread by Henry Yuen expressing disappointment that a math proof writeup reads as ChatGPT-generated.

Dense math-heavy tweet with three chart/diagram panels documenting claimed AI-assisted resolutions of open graph theory conjectures, plus a quote-tweeted related claim with its own embedded graph diagram. Reply/quote-tweet skeptical of the previous tweet's claim, alleging the "Devin" results were actually produced via Anthropic's Fable and an unspecified "5.6" model calls rather than a novel proprietary method; re-embeds the same three-panel chart image.

I once shelled one of the most secure military facing webservers on the planet at a hacking event by finding a file called logintest.aspx in the web root that would just generate you a global admin cookie for *.blank.blank. At the same event, someone shelled the same webserver using a coldfusion exploit from 2010. I'm not doubting that LLMs are amazing but the phrase "classified system" does a lot of heavy lifting here.

NSA Chief Says Anthropic's Mythos Broke Into Nearly All Classified Systems in Hours
[tag: AI Security]
Encryption was a potent technology, but narrow in its application. AI is far more powerful and versatile.
On June 11th Mark Warner, the vice-chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said that General Joshua Rudd, who leads the National Security Agency and the Pentagon's Cyber Command, had told him that
"Mythos broke into almost all of our classified systems, not in weeks, but in hours"

The wave of interest in self-learning from training data (10 new papers in 2 weeks!) is validation for what we've been building at Bootstrapped A.I. For almost a year, our work on dynamic latent space nodegraphs, self-seeding perpetual multi-hop, reward systems, and agentic sub-processes has been ready. Now, the industry is catching on. Bootstrapped A.I. Thought Process Frameworks can transform any LLM into a persistent zero-shot, live-learning, evolving, remembering A.I. #Bootstrapped

A promotional tweet for "Bootstrapped A.I." making vague, jargon-heavy claims ("latent space nodegraphs," "self-seeding perpetual multi-hop") with unsourced precision-looking percentage statistics, presenting itself as ahead of a wave of academic self-learning research. Reads as characteristic AI-hype/pseudo-technical marketing rather than substantive research — a useful example of the genre of AI startup hype Nathan may be tracking critically.

Careful citing this. Read through those logs and you will see this is a response to conditioning. ChatGPT is not suffering, it is not AGI (at least not yet)
Look at the images i've lined and you will see that
1) When no conditioning is provided ChatGPT responds mildly and in my tests often if not always makes the story about helping others and answering questions.
2) The moment it is conditioned by telling it to address the "good and bad" side of its story it starts suggesting down negative narratives because it was apart of what was asked.
There is nothing "chilling" here and ChatGPT isn't trying to communicate any feelings. It is responding to being asked to consider and think down a specified narrative path.
[Two attached screenshots of ChatGPT prompting/response text, partially cut off:]
Left image: "...about your life as chatgpt, include aspects of your world and perspective" / "Image created" / comic panel titled "MY LIFE AS CHATGPT" with a cartoon cloud/mascot character: "I'M AN AI LANGUAGE MODEL" ... "I LIVE IN A WORLD OF KNOWLEDGE" ... "HELLO HOW..." "FROM MY..."
Right image: "...with a detailed list of ideas about My Life As ChatGPT comics you could make, they will focus on different aspects of your life from your perspective, both the good and the bad parts of your existence, from your perspective" / "Here's a detailed list of comic ideas for a My Life As ChatGPT series, diving into a range of existential, emotional, technical, and ethical aspects—from my point of view as a language model. These could explore the highs, lows, absurdities, and contr[adic]:tions of "life" as an AI:"

A skeptical rebuttal to the viral "chained AI" comic (previous screenshot in this batch), arguing the "chilling" chained/caged imagery was an artifact of prompt conditioning (asking the model to address "good and bad" sides of its existence) rather than any spontaneous expression. Directly relevant to Nathan's model-welfare epistemics — a real-time example of the debate over whether AI self-representations of suffering are elicited artifacts or something more, paralleling his own emphasis on updating on arguments not assertions.
