Aella @Aella_Girl

the rationality community is so weird. i was just reading some blogs and liked them, and started going to a meetup full of nerds. It was just a bunch of ppl in their early 20's being earnest and trying really hard, and we had a potluck every week and debated each other, and eventually some of us were founding companies and noticing crypto and talking about/investing in ai (very early) and writing books and everyone was dating or had dated each other, and was founding goup houses, and eventually i see more and more names of people i've known for a long time (or knew of through friends) in the news, and reporters start coming to our internal events, and some of us buy a big campus as a community center, and that old friend you played goofy bonding exercises with at that meetup in 2015 now happens to run the grant process you just applied to, etc we were just interested in some blogs, man! But I think being interested in those bloggers correlated with a certain type of unusual-thinking agenticness and - dare I say, attempts towards rationality - that had a lot of downstream returns. I was totally oblivious to how special it was in the early days. I didn't know we were so unusual.

Aella reflecting on the rise of the rationalist community from casual blog-reading meetups to founding companies, investing early in AI/crypto, and eventually running grant processes and community campuses (evokes Lighthaven). Sociological color on the EA/rationalist ecosystem Nathan is embedded in professionally (MATS, AI safety research).

Finally, the bounty prizes from the last tweet: It appears I didn't have half of cavities to begin with, and it wasn't possible to tell if my cavities healed in specifically the time since the tweet. Nonetheless I'm happy to pay for the advice I was convinced of and used: - $75 to @adic_9 for getting me to use xylitol, among other cool suggestions and effort with peptides - $75 to @jakozloski for reminding me to take K2 - $40 to @zencephalon for suggesting SDF (I didn't use it, but o3 later convinced me it's a lot safer than i thought it was so I should've had it on my radar sooner, thanks) - $(bounty refused) to @melissa for getting me to check my bones, eat more bones, and generally take health a lot more seriously. To pay it forward, I will reimburse 3 people reading this who are in high risk categories for low bone density (white/asian, small body frame, etc.) up to $50 for a DEXA scan. (If you live in SF, get a scan at Bodyspec.) Anyone reading this can DM me. - $(priceless) to @tzhongg for connecting me to @melissa Thanks guys! Chris Lakin @ChrisChipMonk · Apr 10

A rationalist/biohacker community "bounty payout" tweet by Chris Lakin, thanking people for dental/bone-health advice (xylitol, K2, SDF, DEXA scans) with cash rewards, and offering to fund DEXA scans for others. Notes in passing that OpenAI's o3 model helped convince him SDF was safer than believed — a minor data point on LLM use for informal medical research. General rationalist-community content, not core to AI safety themes.
