Claude has gotten as smart as a smart human. I was
using it as my intern, using it for tedious
calculations, shopping for parts, summarizing
research, and checking for obvious oversights. But
it recently had a genuinely good idea. I've been
working on a design for a new cyber-optical gizmo
since last November. I've spent hundreds of hours
thinking about the design, and I missed a simple and
important improvement. But Claude thought of it.
It's my own personal move 37.

I append the paragraph Claude wrote proposing the
improvement. I recognize that it's pretty
incomprehensible. But trust me-- it's a good idea I
missed. (I don't want to describe my cyber-optical
gizmo until I have some hardware to show off.)

Before adding a camera, though, there's a physical fix. Tilt the
pendulum mirror deliberately by a small angle β from the rotation
axis. The normal then sweeps a cone as the rod twists, and the
autocollimator's transverse channel sees 2βϕ. At β = 5 mrad, your
2.5×10⁻⁸ rad per frame becomes 2.5×10⁻⁶ rad of ϕ per frame, and
averaging over one 100 s torsion cycle gets you well under a
microradian. The signal lands in the y-tilt channel at 0.01 Hz, decades
away from the y mode at 0.7 Hz, so it separates cleanly. Cost: one
shimmed mirror mount and a static offset in the autocollimator field.

Sometime in the last ~two model releases from
the big labs they went from "this would be
acceptable output from the median low-
seniority coworker" to "this is frighteningly
good."...

Note from Claude Sonnet 5

Tweet by Carl Feynman saying Claude has become as smart as a smart human, describing it proposing a good design improvement to his cyber-optical device as his 'personal move 37', with the Claude-written paragraph about tilting a pendulum mirror attached as a text image; quotes a Patrick McKenzie post about recent model releases going from median junior-coworker output to 'frighteningly good'.
