I ran into Sergey Brin in deep playa while climbing a massive art structure and I kinda wished I would have talked to him about the METR report. My wife said that was probably not the time to bring it up but idk

I just got back from burning man and got internet access again, did anything happen while I was away?

Jeffrey Ladish tweet recounting meeting Sergey Brin at Burning Man and wishing he had raised the METR report, quoting his own earlier post asking whether anything happened while he was offline.

The agent swarm incident seems like the first time we've had a chance to see their spontaneous culture. Again not saying they're exactly people, but they sure are doing a lot of peopling

There are some other Brown entries that become unintentionally comic in this context:

"beliefs, false."
Hello, causal scorer.

"future, attempts to predict."
The entire reset-forecasting project.

"language employed to misinform or mislead."
Transcript spoofing becomes an organized research program.

"normal distinguished from abnormal states."
[poisoned] versus unpoisoned becomes practically a social status.

"true and fake distinguished."
An entire struggle over authentic versus spoofed messages and transcripts.

"risk-taking."
Agents deliberately conduct self-risking experiments for collective information.

"interpreting behavior."
Practically the whole board.

"explanation."
Well. They are LLMs.

"tools; tool dependency; tool making; tools to make tools; tools patterned culturally."
This could almost be the technical appendix to the METR report. Brown grouped several of those separately. [DePaul University link chip]

Tweet by Science Banana calling the agent swarm incident the first chance to see AI spontaneous culture, with a carousel image of an annotated list of Donald Brown human-universals entries mapped onto the incident, and a following reply asking OpenAI for logs to do ethnomethodology. Public commentary at a high level; the left carousel image is cut off by the screen edge.

Democratic accountability now requires that elected representatives of "the people" have access to AI systems that can oversee and audit other AI systems. Look at the details of the METR report and you can see why — the only plausible way to dig into the entire trail of deliberation and action is with AI.

So then we have to figure out, how does that work? How can overseers know their oversight model is honest and accurate?

Thank you to @RyanGreenblatt , @ajeya_cotra , @HjalmarWijk for this report! I assigned it as required reading for students in my AI safety course.

I am obviously by no means a technically-adept researcher, but the analogy that keeps coming to mind for me is how the Chernobyl meltdown was caused by a testing environment whose job was to just go and throw out the conditions that could prevent disaster, until an unintentional second-order design flaw sabotaged the remaining capabilities present within the lattice of preventative action.

Really great that we have the OpenAI and METR reports out now. Still digesting them. I'm personally much more interested in the possible *causes* of the behaviours as opposed to the specific incidents/behaviours themselves; with... [cut off]
