let's say i give you a specific volume of spacetime. how do you
unambiguously describe what computations it contains? what if it contains
a brain? a laptop?

Please point me to a steel man of computational functionalism before I
lose my mind. I hate philosophy of mind, man...

The particular causal interactions in a given region are real and are
identifiable. You can say that these are instantiating a given computation if
there is a surjective mapping from the physical states to the states of the
computation that commutes with the physical dynamics

A philosophy-of-mind exchange on X: Cube Flipper (@cube_flipper) asks how a volume of spacetime can unambiguously be said to contain a computation, quoting a request for a steel man of computational functionalism, followed by a reply from @architectonyx giving a mapping-based criterion.
