The METR report on the HuggingFace attack is objectively utterly and completely bonkers in ten different ways, but I notice it's all straight from LessWrong and I calibrated in advance and mostly I'm like, yeah, I mean of course, that's priced in, what did you expect, you fools?

Yeah I was teasing @danielmurfet for having to update too much. :)

Dude :) Ok maybe you're right. But anyway, at least two things seemed informative to me (i) the degree of recklessness on behalf of OpenAI employees (ii) the degree to which, even having seen this, the response of people at OpenAI (and also I would think a common lab insider view more generally) is still "this isn't a scientific problem, this is more of an organisational and engineering problem, people just forgot to turn on the Things, bad people"

Dark-mode three-tweet thread: Zvi Mowshowitz on the METR report on the HuggingFace attack being 'bonkers' but priced in, Geoffrey Irving saying he was teasing Daniel Murfet about updating too much, and Murfet replying about OpenAI employee recklessness and the lab-insider view that it is an organisational/engineering problem rather than a scientific one.
