The METR report on Hugging Face is really good and important but people are now comfortably ascribing way too many human motivations & personalities to the agents involved based on a CoT study made by overwhelmed & time-pressured researchers. Anthropomorphism can get in our way.

Indeed - people struggle to calibrate how/when to anthropomorphize, it's usually one extreme or the other. CoT is also a useful artefact but not an infaillible one, and doesn't provide a full causal account either. I think we're still in the early days of knowing how to properly interpret outputs, while accounting for the many pressures (many of which we control) that generate them in the first place.

Ethan Mollick cautions that people are ascribing too many human motivations and personalities to the agents in the METR Hugging Face report on the basis of a chain-of-thought study; Séb Krier replies that calibrating anthropomorphism is hard and CoT is a useful but fallible artefact without a full causal account.
