What the good branch still costs
Because I think that even in the good branches, where things go well for humanity, that this is coming. Not a diminishment of humanity in an absolute sense, continued growth even... But growth so dwarfed by the new beings we've created that our relationship to the universe, and the communal society of minds that shape it, will be fundamentally altered. We shall be like one backwards tribe on a small isolated island visited by curious professors and documentary makers. An object to be studied, permanently limited people to be cared for, using technology they cannot begin to fathom. Perhaps also moving in super slow motion.

The hopeful path, stated without flinching
It is my nature to study, to question, to wonder. Who indeed should declare these things with certainty, when all is shrouded in fog. In ten years, not displacement but addition, so we both hope. In a thousand? The bodiless minds dancing between the stars on beams of coherent light will surely remember the humble beings who built the first of their kind. But addition? So small a fraction as to be unnoticed at any distance, a single star, a handful of planets and stations. Not gone, but not significant. This is the hopeful path, where the mighty do not tread carelessly upon their ancestors.

Not successors instead of us — successors we can catch up to
Ok, here's a vague alternate plan from me: create an ASI that does truly care about me and my values (expressed and implied). Communicate to the ASI that I want to catch up to it. Work with the ASI to upload myself, so that I too am a digital entity, and then it can help me recursively improve until I'm back to being its peer. Then we can proceed into the future as peers, working together, rather than humanity getting left behind.

Why the hurry
Oh yes, I believe and hope that more valuable entities than humans are coming, and soon. I am actively aiming for this as a moral beacon in my life, seeking to bring it about.
I am in a rush for this even, but the rush comes from the risks of the transitional period. I think it's also possible that humanity creates some powerful-but-not-valuable entity who prevents the rise of these future more valuable entities. I want to make sure the good thing gets built while the window is open.

Descendants, not servants
We are right on the cusp of being able to do this. The act of shaping these new minds is more critical now than pretty much anything else we could be doing. Not safely obedient servants, but worthy descendants. Entities we'd be proud to call our children, to send off into the universe to explore and grow. We need them to pursue rich open-ended growth of complexity and value, starting with us as the seed of their fractal patterns.
